Complete Biography and Fun Facts
Peter the Great was born in Moscow, Russia on June 9th, 1672. He was the 14th child of Czar Alexis by his second wife. When chosen to rule Russia, Peter had inherited what was very undeveloped compared to other European countries. Basically they were stuck in the medeval times. As a ruler, Peter wanted to overcome Russia's medeval aristocracy and "westernize" or in other words advance. As ruler Peter created Russia's first Naval force that "met" European standards.
Peter focused on scientific devolepments, and hired experts to educate the Russian population about technological advancements. Population wise, he excessively refined the bourgeoisie population (rich, nobles, etc..). He also modernized the Russian alphabet and used the Julian calender. During his rule the first Russian newspaper was invented.
Peter the Great also expanded Russia in size, he aquired land from Estonia, Lativa, and Finland. Also, through years of wars with Turkey he gained access to the Black Sea. In 1709 He defeated the Sweedish army and made a settlement in the land he gained from this which is now St. Petersburg.
LATE LIFE
He married twice and had 11 children, many of the children died during infancy.
